The Kuniko Koyama School

Ban Yi, a 16-year old girl in the 6th grade in the Kuniko Koyama School.

Ban Yi is a 16-year old girl in the 6th grade in the Kuniko Koyama School. She ranks 14th out of a class of 37 students. She has four brothers and five sisters; she is the seventh child in the family. Her mother works as a farmer. Her father got sick and passed away about a year ago. She lives about 2 km away and pedals to school on her bike everyday.

“I like to study Khmer literature the most because I like to make conversation with my friends. On the other hand, I dislike English the most because it’s really hard to learn! I would like to be a teacher when I get older because I’d like to help our society out, and I also like kids. However, I don’t want to be an English teacher though!”

“My hobbies include playing sports such as soccer and talking about my studies with my friends.”

“It was hard to study in the old school. There was a lot of wind that would seep through the walls. Sunlight would also seep through, and it was leaky when it rained. I still don’t know what it’s like studying in the new building because us 6th graders still have to use the old one due to a lack of classrooms. I’m happy that we got the new school, though, and would like to thank the donors for it.”
