The Miki Group Cattleya School

Mr. Savoeur Kran is the director of the Miki Group Cattleya School. He is forty-five years old and is ethnic Tom Puon.
He is married and has six children. His house is near the school, but he comes to school by motorcycle.

On himself:

“I was born and raised in this village. 90 percents of the villagers here belong to the Tom Puon ethnic group and the remaining ten percent are Laotian and Khmer. I became a teacher in 1979, right after the country was liberated from the Khmer Rouge. And in 1981 I was promoted to the school director.

On teaching:

“I like teaching mathematics and Khmer. I think that in our daily life we need numbers and language, therefore I focus on these two subjects. Social studies and the applied sciences in my opinion are the second priority.”

On his difficulty:

“The children of this village have never had a chance to study at high school because they have no relatives in the provincial town where a high school exists. They can study up to 6th grade and then leave the school. That’s the situation in my village.”

On the new building:

“The old school didn’t have a wall and it was difficult for teachers to have classes. Furthermore, the classroom lacked tables for the students. Because of the poor state of the building, the children were not interested in coming to school. Now, with the new concrete building, it is easy for the teacher because they are no longer worried about the rain. The number of students has increased to 120 since the new building came as compared to 70 students at the old school.”
