Lay Sok Heng, a 14-year old 4th grade student at the Shinohara Manabu School

Lay Sok Heng is a 14-year old 4th grade student at the Shinohara Manabu School. He is an only child. His father is a policeman at the communal authorities and his mother works as a housewife. His house is near the school, so he walks five minutes to school everyday.

“I like studying Khmer literature for it’s easier than the other subjects. For me, math is the most difficult because the arithmetic is too complicated. It has many numbers and I am weak in division.”

“When I grow up I want to be a teacher because I want to teach children. I understand that teachers do not get paid well compared with other jobs, but I am still willing to do it.”

“I don’t want to follow in my father’s footsteps because his job is too busy. My father is on guard almost every night. He goes out from dark until 1 or 2 am and then comes home.”
