Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Sem Seyhorng is 13 years old, and in the 7th grade at the Hun Sen Rovieng secondary school in Tang Trork village, Robieb commune, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province.

There are 4 members in her family, her mother, grandmother and younger brother. She is the first child in her family. Her father has left them since they were a baby and no longer cares for or supports them at all. Her family is poor and her mother does not have any land for farming, so she works as cleaner at the health care center. From that job she earns 300,000 Riel a month to support her two kids and her mother.

Seyhorng sometimes sell potatoes, tamarind, or other vegetables earning 5,000 – 10,000 Riel to support herself and her studies. Her family responsibilities and obligations have made Seyhorng commonly miss class and has negatively affected her studies.

In the future Sem Sreyhorng wants to be a teacher because she loves this job, she likes teaching and she wants to share her knowledge to the kids. Moreover, she wants to earn money to support her family.
