The Miyazaki Honten School

Mr. Lem Ty, the school director (May, 2001)

Mr. Lem Ty is the director of The Miyazaki Honten School. He is 48 years old. Like most school directors in Cambodia, he is also a teacher in the school.

In Their Own Words. . .

On his favorite subjects to teach: “I like to teach all subjects because they are all very important.”

On the old school building: “I am very happy with the new school building because the old building was not easy to work in. The old school building was very different from the new school building because the old building had no walls, and everything would get wet when it rained. Classes would disturb each other (because of holes in the walls). In the past, I had problems with our building, but even today with the new school I still lack teaching materials”.

On why he became a teacher: “I have been teaching for 20 years, since 1981. Before then, during the time of Pol Pot, I was a nurse in Trea Commune. At that time, there was a shortage of teachers, so I volunteered to take this job. I thought that students were unable to learn because there were very poor, and I wanted to help them. I love teaching.”  [Pol Pot was the leader of the genocidal Khmer Rough regime which ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979.]
