The World Mate School

Number Ten

August, 2001

Ly Daneth is a 12-year-old fourth grade student at the World Mate School No. Ten.  She was ranked third in her class of 22 students.  Her father is a construction worker in Phnom Penh and her mother is a farmer in the village.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “Compared to the new school, the old one did not have enough tables, no walls, and when it rained water would leak into the classrooms.  But I appreciate the old school building, which allowed me to gain knowledge.  The new school building has walls, windows, and doors and I want to take care of it so I can continue to learn.”

On school subjects:  “I like learning Khmer, social science and applied science because these subjects have letters to read and are easy to understand.   Mathematics is my least favorite because it involves numbers, so it is very difficult for me to understand.”

On her hobbies: “I try to learn my lessons by heart, then I cook for my parents and then I feed the pigs.  When I meet my friends at school during recess I like to play jump on the rubber band and when class begins I try to listen to the teacher.”

On her family:  “I plan to graduate high school because a high education will help my poor family.  My parents want me to graduate only from secondary school but my grandparents, aunt, and uncle want me to learn as much as I can and are willing to sell land and the house.”

On the future: “I want to be a nurse because I want to help the people of the world.”

Message for the donor: “I would like to thank the donor very much for this new building and I wish him good luck and longevity.”
