An embarrassed Thong Sinath stands in front of her school.  (October, 2001)

Thong Sinath is an 11-year-old second grade student at the Chroy Banteay Nippon Foundation School.  Her father is a carpenter and her mother a housewife.  She walks the two kilometers from her home to the school.  She was born in a refugee camp in Thailand and moved here seven years ago.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “I like the new building because it is nice.  My old school building had bamboo walls and so it was very loud.”

On her family’s education: “I have two brothers and one sister.  My elder brother is 17 years old and he has never gone to school because when he was younger there was no school here.  Now, he is older and too shy to go to school.  My younger sister is in first grade here, and my younger brother is too young to go to school.  My parents never went to school.”

On school subjects: “I like learning mathematics because it is easy to calculate.  I like all subjects, but mathematics is my favorite.”

On her free time: “My chores are to cook, wash the dishes, and clean the house.  I also read with my friends.”

On her future:  “I will try to graduate from sixth grade but after that my mother wants me to help her.  I would like to be a teacher, if I can.”
