(October, 2001)

Cheun Ley is a 12-year-old sixth grade student at the Samlot Nippon Foundation School.  She was ranked first in her class of 32 at the end of the last year.  She has one older brother, one older sister, and three younger sisters.  All six of her siblings study at the school.  Her father is a nurse and her mother is a farmer.

In Their Own Words. . .

On school subjects: “I like mathematics because I want to know how to calculate.  I don’t like applied science because it is difficult to learn.”

On her free time:  “When I am at home, I like to cook and read books.  When I come to school, I like to meet my friends and we talk and do our lessons.”

On her future: “I want to graduate from high school because I want to get more knowledge.  My parents want me to graduate because they want me to learn more.  My father finished ninth grade and my mother finished 11th.  I want to be a nurse in the future so that I can help people who are sick.”

If I could go anywhere…:  “I would go to my father’s home village because then I can have many things to eat.”
