The Cambodia Rural School Project
The Kon Ka Ek Nippon
Foundation School
Koy Sinath is a fifth grade student at the Kon Ka Ek Nippon Foundation School. Of the forty-five students in his class, he was ranked thirty-second.
On himself: | I am fourteen years old. I have three siblings, but none of them attends this school. My mother is a farmer, and my father works for an NGO in Battambang. My house is near [where the girl lives]
On the new building: | I am very glad to study in the new building. I don’t have any problem in leaving my study materials at school anymore. At the old school, a pagoda, my pens and notebooks would sometimes disappear.
Favorite subject: | Science. It helps me understand more about the world around me than any other subject does.
In his spare time: | Sometimes I work, and sometimes I study. I also play “Chhous” for rubber bands.
[Chhous is a game where each player removes one of his sandals, and attempts to kick it towards a stack of, in this case, rubber bands. The sandal that hits or comes closest to the stack wins whatever’s in there. The catch is that the students can use only the foot with a sandal to kick, while the other foot cannot touch the ground.]
In the future: | I want to be a teacher, so that I can teach the children as the other teachers leave.
If he could travel anywhere: | I want to go the beach and a foreign country like Vietnam. I want to explore Vietnam. |
