The Angkor Ban Nippon

Foundation School

Haing Rayo is a 9-year-old first grade student at the Angkor Ban Nippon Foundation School.
He was ranked first out of the 50 students in his class.

On himself:

I have two brothers and sisters. My brothers are both in school. My parents pick corn across the border for a Thai company. I’ve lived here for nine months. Before then, I lived in Moung Russei district. We moved here because there wasn’t any work where we used to live. Our house is 300 meters from the school.

On the new building:

I am very happy with this school. I used to study in Moung Russei, but that school wasn’t very comfortable to study in because the roof and walls weren’t any good; the walls were made of bamboo and the roof was covered with thatch Also, our desks were made of bamboo, so they weren’t very smooth.

Favorite subject:

My favorite subject is Khmer because I want to learn how to read and write.

On his summer vacation:

I’ll go to Thailand and pick corn with my parents. I’ll be doing it during the whole vacation. After that, I’ll go back to school. Because of the new building, I want to study here.

If he could make any wish:

I would wish for $2,000 and use it to buy food.

If he could do anything:

I’d be a police chief and not a corrupt one.

If he could travel anywhere:

I would travel to Phnom Penh because my uncle lives there. I’ve been to visit him before.
