The Sralao Tong Nippon

Foundation School

Mr. Soeun Leuth is the school director of the Sralao Tong Nippon Foundation School.
He is 48 years old and has four children.
His eldest son is 18 years old and is studying in high school.

On his background:

I was born in one of the villages of Koh Anketh district, Takeo province. My family sent me to study in Phnom Penh. In 1972 I studied at 9th grade at a high school in Phnom Penh. In the same year, I visited my family in Takeo province and couldn’t return to school because the Khmer Rouge occupied the village. At the first year with the Khmer Rouge, I was appointed as a teacher to teach children who were going to join the Khmer Rouge’s Army.

After the Khmer Rouge was ousted from power, my family and I were driven to Pailin and I was forced to be a soldier for the Khmer Rouge until 1998. Then I was made a teacher again by the Khmer Rouge, and started teaching at the Kamrieng primary school. At the start, I taught fourth grade, then fifth grade, and after next year I’ll teach sixth grade.”

On the new building: I am very happy with the new school. We met with many difficulties while teaching at the old school. Together with the villagers, I would like to look after and maintain the school so that it can last long enough for the coming generations to use.

On teaching: I like teaching Khmer literature, mathematics and history. Khmer is our mother tongue and the official language. If the children know it clearly, they can go on to study other languages easily. I think that Khmer literature is difficult to study. I dislike teaching applied science because it has complicated theories and foreign words in it. It is difficult to demonstrate the theory.
