Ta Kvai is my new name. My old name is Leang Chheut. I got my new name after my father passed away. My father used to be the village chief here. When he died I became the new chief, and so the villagers gave me a new name. That’s the custom of the Pour ethnic group [one of Cambodia’s ethnic minority groups]. I became the village chief in 1992. I have two sons and two daughters. My 13-years old daughter is still studying here. My wife and I are both farmers. Our house is just across from the school.

This land that the school is built on used to belong to me. I gave it to the community so that they could build the school. I am very happy to have the new school. People here have never seen a concrete building since the French occupation. The old school building was made of wood. This school is beautiful, so I am very happy.
