The Rom Chek Nippon

Foundation School

Mrs. Chan Em is an elected member of the community group near the Rom Chek Nippon Foundation School.
She is in charge of gender issues.

On herself: I am forty-six years old. I have three children; one daughter is a third grade student here. My husband is a farmer.

On the new building:

I am very happy about the new school that has been provided for the kids of this village. At the old school, the children didn’t try to learn much; that school was small and old. Now that we have a new building, the children come to school more often.

On gender and education:

On the one hand, Villagers would rather send boys than girls to school [because boys are needed on the farms]. However, most girls usually don’t study past the third grade. They are poorly educated. One of the things we do is to try and give these girls some vocational training, especially sewing. Sometimes garment factories will need extra labor, and we try and set some of these girls up with them. I try and advise the parents of these girls that they need more education.
