The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Sralao Torng Nippon

Foundation School

Mr. Pel Sam On is the director of the Sralao Torng Nippon Foundation School.

On himself: I am fifty-six years old. I have eight children. One of my sons attend this school, as well as four grandchildren. Besides teaching, I work as a rice farmer. I’ve been a teacher since 1982. I became director in 1993. Education was always my favorite. I applied to the district office of the ministry of education in order to be able to teach in my village. Today I teach both first and second grade.

On the new building: I would like to thank the donor for providing this new school. There has never been anything like this before it. I was worried about the old school, because parts of it had collapsed and we suffered under the forces of nature. So I’m very happy to have this new school, and so are all the villagers here.

On encouraging the students:

I encourage the students by giving them pencils and books. The top five students of each class win one pencil and one notebook after each final exam. I get the support for these gifts from the villagers around here and the ministry of education.
