Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Mai Sokchan is 10 years old, grade 5 at Peam Khvav Primary School, located in Peam Khrav village, Dom Bokrong commune, Phom Srouch district and Kampong Speu province.

There are 8 members in her family, parents, three brothers and three sisters including her. She is the sixth child in her family and her older sister goes to work as the factory staff and get 180$ in per month and send to her mother for 80$ to support her family and her brothers and sisters study at the seam her school. Her father’s name is Mang Min, 49 years old and he is a farmer. Her mother’s name is Meou Lim, 40 years old and she is a mango gatherer. She earns 30,000 riels in season. They have a farmland about 5,000 m2 for growing rice. Her family takes crop yield of rice is 1,000 kg per year and they keep for daily eating in a whole year. Even they have income but this family still live in a bad situation and sometime Sokchan doesn’t have enough money to buy school supplies but she still keeps trying to come to school everyday.

In future, Mai Sokchan wants to be a garment worker. She likes to cut the clothes and sewing. She hopes to cut many good clothes for her villagers and her family. Moreover, She wants to earn money for support her family to live in a better life.
