Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Thorn Yann is 16 years old and she is a student in grade 10 at The Boribo high school in Porpel Village, Khonrong Commune, Boribo District, Kompong Chhnang Province.

There are eleven members in her family, parents, five brothers and four sisters and she is the Fifth child in her family. Her father’s name is Kean Thoeun and he is 48 years old and her mother’s name is Phuong Yoeun and she is 50 year old, they are farmers. Yann’s family have owns farmland for one hectare for growing rice and they are able to collect 45 bags per year and they are selling for 30 bags and get 600$ for support the whole family and they are keeping for 15 bags of rice for daily eating in a whole year. After finish from growing rice, her family can earn 25$ per month from planting vegetables.  Their income is very low so they cannot support for the 11 members in the family.

She is a very good student and after a long day of studying at school, she goes home to help her parents with housework.

In the future, she wants to be a Khmer teacher because she wants to share her knowledge and teach the children in her commune about Khmer letters and Khmer stories. Most importantly, she would like to be able to support her family and give them an opportunity to live in a better life.
