Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Hong Seyla is 14 years old, a student in 9th grade at The House of Joy and Happiness School in Thkeng village, Rohas commune, Rovieng district, Preah Vihear province.

Hong Seyla has an older brother and she is the second child in her family. Her parents are farmers and they feed 10 hens and 2 pigs at their house. Her family condition is depending on working at the rice field where they can get 2 tons per year. They have to sell some of the rice product for cash that they can get approximately $100 for 500kg rice. Besides working in rice field, they also crop some vegetables around their house and they earn about $325 in a season. All the income is not enough to support the family and school material for their children. Seyla mostly skipped her school to help her parents to do housework and in the rice field on the busy seasons, like growing in raining and harvesting in fall season. She loves her study very much, but she also faces the difficult challenge between her study and her daily life.

In the future, she wants be a teacher because she wants to share her knowledge and teach the children to become good students and good children for the society.
