Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Seng Ratanak is a 14 year-old student in the 7th grade at The Savant School, which is located in Taney village, Choam Sangker commune, Phnom Sruoch district, and Kampong Speu province.

Ratanak has one older sister and she is the second child in the family. Her mother’s name is Mrs. Kem Khon, who is 34-years old and her parents divorced when she was one month old. Ratanak’s mother has owns half a hectare of farmland to produce seven sacks of rice (80kg per sack) per year. Ratanak confirmed that her mother was able to sell 5 out of the secen sacks of rice for $90.

This income is insufficient to financially support the family’s needs, therefore, Ratanak sometimes misses school to work as a mango picker with her mother in order to earn a small amount of money for everyday needs.

Ratanak expressed her future goal as: “I want to become a teacher of Mathematic, because it mainly fit to the business people.”
