Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Voeurn Theavy is a 14 years old and she is a student in the 7th grade at The Cambodia Hope School in Melum village, Melum commune, Boribour district, Kompong Chhnang province.

Theavy is the only child in the family. Her father’s name is Hem Voeurn and her mother’s name is  Houng Saroet. Her father is a fisherman and do not own any farmland. Her mother weaves pieces of bamboo to make fishing equipment (Phorng), earning $1.25 per item. Her father catches fish and sells them at the local market, earning 10,000-15,000 Riels per day. Majority of the families income goes to paying off debt that was borrowed for taking care of sick relatives.  As the family does not grow rice, they have to buy food to eat every day.  They are so poor and they don’t enough money to buy rice sometime.

Theavy is a good student and she always get a high score in class and when her friend don’t understant about the lesson, she helps them to explain the lesson.

Theavy wants to be a Khmer teacher when she is older, so she can help the children in her community. Most importantly, she would like to be able to support her family and give them an opportunity to live a better life.
