Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

To Be Selected

Nong Pheaktra is 16 years old and she is a student in the 9th grade at The Kozak Ohana School #285 in Mohor Village, Chey Commune, Kampong Svay District, Kampong Thom Province.

Nong Pheaktra has four siblings and is the eldest child in her family. Both of her parents are farmers and they own half a hectare of land, in which they can harvest approximately 400kgs of rice per year.  This is not enough to support the family for a whole year however, so her parents have to buy 1000kg of rice annually.  In order to earn an income to buy food, her mother works picking cashew apples, earning $3/day, and her father is a construction worker in Thailand, earning $50/month.  Her father visits the family every five months, which leaves Pheaktra’s mother to take care of the family.  However, as Pheaktra’s mother works as well, it is her responsibility to care for her younger siblings as she is the eldest child.  However, Pheaktra is a very determined student and she wants to be an English teacher when she grows up.
