Vy Theany is 11 years old, and in 5th grade at The Shintoshin Rotary and Speros (Hawaii) School #2, which is located in Pal Hal village, Rik Reay commune, Rovieng district, and Preah Vihear province.
There are 4 members in her family, her parents and one older brother. She is the second child in her family. Her parents are farmers who own one hectare of farmland to grow rice, producing 600 kg – 700 kg of rice per year, but it does not cover their needs. Nowadays her parents still owe the bank about $1,000 because they need the money to do their farm, buy some medicine for her mother (stomach problems), buy additional rice, and buy daily foods. Her family has a rice paddy field that is far away from home. When planting or harvesting season arrives, the family has to leave home about a month in order to work on the farm, so Theany and her older brother stay at home and they take care of themselves. When they finish their farming, sometimes her mother decides to make some money working on the neighbor’s farm by collecting cashew nuts, clearing land, and harvesting rice. She can make an income of 15,000 Riel per day, and her father works as a carpenter and earns $5 per day, but it is not regular work.
Theany rides a bike to school every day. When she comes back home, she always helps her mother with housework. Sometime the neighbor’s farm hires her to collect cashew nuts and chop cassava.
In the future, she wants to be a doctor because she loves this job and she wants to help people in the community. Moreover, she wants to earn money to support her family and give them an opportunity for a better life.
