The Paul Singh School

(September, 2001)

Mr. Chhay Sarin is director of the Paul Singh School.  He is 53 years old and married.  He has four grandchildren studying at the school.  He has been director of the school since 1987.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building:            “I like this new school building very much because I never had a nice school like this before. The new school building is so different from the old school building because it is a brand-new school building and it is very easy to teach the kids and they are also very happy with it.”

“We had an old school building but it collapsed in the wind. When the old school building was destroyed by the wind, I taught the kids under the trees for three years.  Today, we have the new school building where we have had class for the past year.”

“I think that this new school building is a good thing for the village and a good place for developing the students’ knowledge.”

On school subjects:       “I like teaching the kids mathematics and Khmer language but I am the school director, so I no longer teach.  I am not certain what subjects the students like because all children like different things. For example, some kids like mathematics and Khmer and some kids like applied science and social science and some like all subjects. I think that all subjects have different important points, so they should all be taught.”

“I like to advise my students to try to study and not to waste time because the knowledge is treasure for their lives in the future.  I persuade them to keep the school well and told them not to write anything on the walls of the new school building.”

On the school community:  “The school community likes this school very much and they come visit it every week.”

On being a school director:  “I want to work hard to ensure that these children grow up well, and be remembered as a good director after I have gone away.  The challenges are that everything requires constant supervision.  If I don’t supervise everything well then the donor will be disappointed.”

Message for the donor: “Finally, as director of the Paul Singh School, I would like to thank Mr. Singh for supporting this new school building for the students in the village to study in.”
