Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

To Be Selected

Hat Sokhom is 17 years old, and in the 8th grade at the Rak Smey Rik Reay junior high school in Bos Village, Rik Reay Commune, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province.

There are 6 members in her family, her two parents, one younger sister, and two younger brothers. She is the first child in the family. Her parents are farmers. The family owns two and a half hectares of farmland, producing 2,500 kg of rice per year, and they can sell 500 kg to buy clothes, books, and pens for their children. Her parents make their living by growing rice, but their rice field is so far from home that when planting or harvesting season arrives, they have to leave home to stay on the farm until work finishes. Sokhom and her siblings stay with her grandma when her parents are working in the field. Although her family works very hard, they still face a lot of difficulties. They can’t make enough money to support the daily needs of their family.

Sokhom is a student that has problem with her eyes, and she can’t see small letter or sit far from the board. After class Sokhom helps her mother with housework and sometimes she helps her parents work on the farm.

In the future she wants to be a teacher because she wants to share her knowledge with the kids and to help develop the country.
