Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Chanthen is 15 years old, student in 8th grade at the Dahlia Sam School in Roung Mashin village, Tasal commune, O’ral district, Kampong Speu province.

Chanthen has a sister and a brother. She is a first child in the family. Her parents are farmers who own 9,000 m2 of farmland for transplanting rice depend on natural only. Her parents can gather 30 sacks per year. After gathering rice, her mother feeding cow by changing labor with other cow owner and taking a cow for a year of feeding. For her father, in the dry season, he goes to mountain for chopping some wood to sell. But his work is irregular by the season. Her parent can earn about 10,000 to 15,000 riels per day for support family.

In her free time, Chanthen loves to read book, does housework, homework and take cares her brother and sister. Besides the school day, she goes to help her mother in the field and feeding cow. During school day, Chanthen can get 500 riels to school.

In the future, Chanthen wants to be a Chinese interpreter because she loves language learning and wants to work with foreigner. She thinks this career is good for her and she can earn money for support the family.
