Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Sey Tha Chantou

Sey Tha Chantou was born on October 6th 2003 in Morhor Village, Chey Commune, Kampong Svay District, Kampong Thom Province. She is a student in 8th grade at The Kozak Ohana School # 285 or Trapaing Arak Secondary School. It is located in Trapaing Arak Village, Chey Commune, Kampong Svay District, Kampong Thom Province.

Chantou is 16 years old and she has two siblings. She is the second child in the family.  Chantou’s father died when she was very young.  Her mother’s name is Yean Yen and she is a farmer. The family used to own land, but as Chantou’s father became sick, her mother sold their land in efforts to help her husband. Since Chantou’s father passed away, her older brother had to get a job. His name is Tha Phearum, and he works in Phnom Penh as a security guard. He sends home $50/month to help support his siblings and mother.  However, majority of this money goes to supporting Chantou’s younger sister’s education.  As a result, her mother often works at the Thai-Cambodia border, so she can support Chantou’s studies as well. Currently, Chantou and her younger sister live at her aunt and uncles in which they both have to help with housework when they are not at school.
