Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Sorn Chanlin is 14 years old, and is in grade 7 at The Savant School in Taney village, Choam Sangkea commune, Phnom Sruoch district, Kompong Speu province.

Chanlin has one brother and sister, and is the eldest child in the family. Her parents are farmers, owning one hectare of farmland. The family is able to collect 3 tons of rice per year, which is just enough to provide the family with food for a year.  When the farming season is over, Chanlin’s parents work as mango pickers, earning 30,000 Riels a day.  Additionally, the family owns one cow to plow their farmland.

Sorn Chalin gets 500 Riels a day for her studies, and rides her bike to school every day.  Chanlin is a hard worker, and is always a good student in class.  After school, Chanlin is responsible to help her mother with housework, and looking after the land and cow.

In the future Chanlin wants to be a Khmer teacher so she can pass on the Khmer history and knowledge to the next generation.  Moreover, she wants to earn an income that can better support her family.
