Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Vin Vorn is 15 years old, and in the 7th grade at the Rak Smey Rik Reay junior high school in Bos Village, Rik Reay Commune, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province.

There are 6 members in her family, one grandmother, two parents, one older brother and one younger brother. She is the second child in the family. Her parents are farmers who own one and a half hectares of farmland to grow rice, producing 1,500 kg of rice per year, but the harvest is not enough for the family. When they finish their farming, they grow some vegetables and sometimes her parents work on neighbors’ cashew farms earning 30,000 to 40,000 Riel per day, but it is not regular work.

Vin Vorn rides the bicycle to school every day and when she is not studying, she always helps with house work, and farm work and looks after her brother. Additionally, she works harvesting rice or clearing land to earn extra money.

In the future she wants to be a teacher because she loves this job and likes teaching the kids, and she wants to earn money to support her family.
