Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

To Be Selected

Yong Thona is a 12-year-old student in the 7th grade at the Cambodia Hope School in Melum village, Melum commune, Baribour district, Kampong Chhnang province.

Thona  has four members in her family, one grandmother, one nephew, one sister and herself. Her father, Khoem Yi, is 42 year old and has moved to Thailand to work and so has her mother, Kng sokha, 43 years old. As her parents live in Thailand, Thona lives with her grandmother. Every month, Thona’s parents send two million reils to support her children, and pay off the family debt.  Additionally, her grandmother owns one hectare of farmland in which she can grow up to 1020 kg of rice, and is able to sell 600kg, earning 2,000,000-riel/month.

When Thona is not busy studying, she helps her grandmother wash, cook and take care of her nephew.

In the future, Thona wants to become a Khmer teacher so she can share her knowledge with the kids in her commune.
