Chor Phal, a third grade student (May, 2001)
Chor Phal is 14 years old. She is in the third grade, and is the third ranked student in her class. Her parents, Chor Cheb and Plong Theng, are farmers. She has two brothers and five sisters. Three of her sisters also study at The Hayashida Memorial School, including Chor Pha,” ..who is 17 years old and is also studying in the third grade with me.”
On the new school: | “I am happy with the new school building because it is made of very nice concrete. I like to come to school now because the building is so nice.”

On her favorite school subjects: | “I like to learn all subjects, but mathematics is the best because it makes my brain smart.”

On her hobbies: | “Beside studying, I like to help my parents in the fields. When I meet my friends I like to play ‘lot antak’ (a game where the children jump over a hand-made rope made of rubber bands, similar to high jump.). I like to play lot antak because it is good exercise for me.”

On what she wants to be when she grows up: | “I want to be a teacher in the future because I want to teach Cambodian children.” |
