(November, 2001)

Norn Rany is a 10-year-old fourth grade student at the JCVA School.  He was ranked first among the 45 students in his third grade class at the end of the last school year.  His parents are rice farmers, and he is the oldest of four children in his family.  Only his younger brother is old enough to go to school, and he is in second grade.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “I like the new building very much because I need to get knowledge.  My friends also go here.  The building is very nice and new and has many new things.  I really like the computer!”

On school subjects:  “I like Khmer and mathematics because I get good scores in these classes.  I like reading and doing math problems.  Applied science is difficult to understand.  I also like the English and computer lessons very much.  I try to use the computer every day because I want to learn as much as the teachers.”

On his free time: “I go to the rice fields with my parents to help them harvest.  In one growing season, we can produce 40 bags of rice.  I also like playing football [soccer] with my friends in the schoolyard.”

On his future: “I want to go to high school, if my parents have enough money.  I also want to visit Phnom Penh, if I can.  I would like to be a nurse because then I can help my parents or my neighbors when they get sick.”
