The Cambodia Rural School Project
The JCVA School
Mrs. Sao Theary has been the director of the JCVA School since 1999. She was a teacher for 15 years prior to becoming the director.
In Their Own Words. . .
On becoming the director: | “I became director of the school because I have the most education of any of the villagers. Besides, I have experience teaching from 1984 to 1999.”
|
On the new building: | “I like the new building very much because it is very comfortable to study in. In the future the children in this village can get education in computers and English, and of course in their regular courses. The old building was hard to teach in because it didn’t have walls to separate the classes. When the rain fell, it came through the roof so our students couldn’t study. Now that our students have this new building, they endeavor to study very hard and are very fond of this new building.”
|
On school subjects: | “I like teaching all of the courses because they are all important in different ways. However, I think that the most important are Khmer and mathematics. Khmer is our native language, so it is important for everyone to be literate. Mathematics is important because people who know how to do multiplication, addition, division, and subtraction are clever, good at buying and selling things, and quick thinkers.”
|
On the joys of her job: | “The best thing about my job is teaching. I love it very much, and I want to educate the kids in these rural areas. I don’t like corruption, fighting, violence, drinking alcohol, and gambling, because these things don’t contribute to the development of the country.” |
