Ms. Ma Neav Lab, the third grade teacher  (Mar, 2001)

Ms. Ma Neav Lab teaches the third grade at The Fumiko Oshima School.  She is 22 years old.

In Their Own Words. . .

on the new building “I am very lucky to come and teach in this new school building donated by Fumiko Oshima.  I like the new building because the rooms are large, the building is not noisy, and light can come through the window.”

on her family “I am 22 years old.  I have one brother and three sisters.  My older sister is 27 and can get 30 sacks of rice a year as a farmer.   My brother is 18 and drives a motorbike-taxi.  He can earn up to US$2 per day.  My younger sisters are six and seven and are both in 1st grade at this school.”

on school subjects “I want my kids to know about Khmer traditions and the history of Cambodia, so I like teaching social science.  I find it difficult to teach mathematics.”

on the difficulties of teaching  “The difficult part of my job is that we are short of study instruments.”

on keeping students interested  “I always make gestures in class, and sometimes dance – that’s why my kids like to come to class.”

on the joys of teaching “I love to teach small kids because I love small kids.  I want my students to get good jobs in the future and I hope that by giving young people an education, we can prevent more fighting in the future and help our country develop.”

message to the donor “I would like to thank Fumiko Oshima very much for building this very nice school.”
