Koy Srey Dieng, a first grade student  (Mar, 2001)

Koy Srey Dieng is in the first grade at The Masanori Sugihara School.

In Their Own Words. . .

on the new building “I am happy with the new building because it means that I can continue to learn.”

on her family “I have one sister and two brothers.  I am 12 and the youngest.  My oldest brother is 15 and he stopped studying after third grade because we had no money for his education.  My other brother is 14 and he is studying in 5th grade at the secondary school near here.  My older sister is 13 and she stopped studying after second grade because my mother needs her to take care of our cows.  My mother is 36 and she is a farmer.  Sometimes she takes vegetables from our house to sell at the market.  There she can earn 5000 riel (US$1.25) per day.  My father was a soldier.  He died 12 years ago, so I never knew his face.”

on school subjects “I like to learn Khmer and mathematics because they allow me to understand everything.  I do not like social science because I don’t understand it.”

On her hobbies “I like to play ball sports [football, volleyball, etc.] when I have free time.”

On her future “I want to be a businesswoman in the future because I want to earn a lot of money.”
