The Aeon Papaya School

(July, 2001)

Hour Khim is a 14-year-old third grade student at the Aeon Papaya School.  She was ranked fifth out of the 45 students in her class at the end of last year.  Her parents are farmers and she is the youngest of eight children.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “The new school building helps people to escape poverty because we do not need money for repairs and all of the students can get an education.”

On school subjects: “I like mathematics and Khmer because I want to know how to calculate, read, and write.  I dislike applied science because it is difficult to understand.”

On her free time: “I like to read books and play games with my friends.”

On her future: “None of my older brothers and sisters has been to secondary school.  I would like to finish secondary school and high school.  I would like to go to Phnom Penh to work as a seamstress or in a garment factory.  I would spend the money to support my parents when they are old.”
