The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Brian Murphy School

Bon Channarin is a third grade student at the Brian Murphy School.
Out of the fifty-two students in her class, she was ranked second.

On herself:

I am nine years old and I have three siblings. My younger brother is also studying here. He studies in second grade. My mother sells spices and things at the market, and my father is a motorcycle-taxi driver. I live about half an hour away from school (walking).

On the new building:

I have a very good feeling about the new building. It is very energetic here. I changed schools because this school is much closer to my home. I wanted to change school myself, and my parents did also, and so I did. I can study very well here.

Favorite subject:

Khmer language is my favorite subject. It is full of interesting stories. My favorite story is about Buntheun who goes to the jungle to find honey, and the story about the Good Man… but I can’t tell you about them because I read them in my first lesson, and I can’t remember how they go.

On her spare time:

I help my parents boil rice and cut the grass around our house whenever it gets too tall. When I play, I like to jump rope and play “Bai Kom”.*

In the future:

I want to be a teacher and educate students. If I could do absolutely anything, I would be a nurse, because I want to help the poor when they get sick.

If she could travel anywhere

I would visit beautiful places.
