Mr. Sum Samnang is the principle of the Dang Run Nippon Foundation School

On himself: I am 52 years old. I am married, and my wife is housewife. Besides teaching, I also raise pigs. My house is only 500 meters from school. I drive my motorcycle to get here. I graduated teacher school in 1983, in Battambang. I was first assigned to work as school director for one year at Banteay Neang primary school. I have been a director here since 1987.

On the new building: “I am very happy. I never expected that the children of this village would receive a nice building like this one. We even have a computer teacher and a computer. It is very importance for our kids that to learn about computers. It makes it easier for them to find a job in the future.

On teaching: I like this work so much because it helps the kids’ future. I know this from the Polt Pot regime, where education was forbidden. As a result, the people in this village have very little education, which is why this place is developing so slowly. I decided to become a teacher to help educate society.

On school subjects: We teach four subjects in primary school. My favorite is Khmer literature, because when the students understand this subject they are able to communicate with each other.

On keeping the students interested in school: At the end of each semester, I give a notebook and a pen to each of the top five students in every grade. I do this to motivate the students into studying harder.
