The Cambodia Rural School Project
The Jack Bora Feeney School
San Srey Mom is a 16-year-old second grade student at the Jack Bora Feeney School. She just started going to school. Her two younger brothers are in first grade at the school, but her three older siblings are out of school because the secondary school is too far away. Her parents are farmers.
In Their Own Words
On the new building: | “I like the building because it is nice and cool. We used to have class under the trees and in the village, but now we have class in this concrete building.”
On school subjects: | “I like social science because it is easy to learn, and I don’t like applied science because it is very difficult to understand.”
On her hobbies: | “With my free time, I weave reed mats to sell at the market, or I help my parents with their work.”
On her future: | “I want to go to secondary school, because if I graduate then I can find a job easily and support my family. My mother finished tenth grade, and I don’t know how far my father went in school, but he can speak Chinese.”
If I could go anywhere…: | “I would go to Phnom Penh, because I hear that it is a happy place, so I want to see for myself.”
If I could do anything…: | “I would help my village develop. I want to be a teacher when I grow up.”
Message for the donors: | “I would like to thank Bernadette and Michael Feeney for donating a very nice school building.” |
