(November, 2001)

Mrs. Yin Savan is a farmer with one child at the school.

In Their Own Words. . .

On her family: “I am a farmer and I am married.  My husband is handicapped.  He has only one leg.  His leg was lost in a landmine explosion.  Today he is a fisherman.  We have four children, but only one is at the school.”  [Unexploded ordinance and landmines are a lingering problem in Cambodia, causing 823 injuries and deaths in 2000 according to the Cambodian Mine Action Center.]

On the new building: “I think that this new building has improved the village because when we had the old school building the kids were all scared to go there because they thought it would fall down.  Now that we have the new building, many more kids are going to school.  I like it because it is concrete and is a beautiful color.”
