The Kazuko Nishie School
Cheim Bun Ny, a teacher at The Kazuko Nishie School (Dec. 2000)
Cheim Bun Ny is a third grade teacher at The Kazuko Nishie School. She is 40 years old and has been teaching since 1980.
She learned about The Rural School Project by listening to international news in Khmer from the Voice of America radio program, hearing about #1 The Wakako Hironaka School opening in November of 1999.
Cheim Bun Ny is married with 6 children. Two children attend The Kazuko Nishie School. They are in the fifth and sixth grades.
“I became a teacher because I want to teach children.
I have sympathy for the children of Cambodia, and I want to help them succeed.”
on her favorite subject to teach | “I like to teach Khmer language to the children. Cambodian people have pride and honor in their culture, and I like to teach these qualities in my classes.”

on her students favorite subject | “My students like mathematics. Mathematics has numbers, and everything has numbers, so they like to learn about everything!”

on the future of her students | “I hope in the future my students will have good jobs and good knowledge. In this village, most students will stay in school until the 12th grade, and if they have money, they will try to go to Phnom Penh. It all depends on money.” (Phnom Penh is Cambodia’s capital city)

on how she keeps her students interested | “I give advice to my kids, telling them to pay attention and to study hard. I also will tell funny stories to the children. We sing songs and dance, too, at the end of the day.”

on the new school building | “I am so happy and excited to see the new school. I hope all of the kids will be able to study there.”

“The new building will help me teach children because kids will love the new school and will be excited to learn. The new materials like a blackboard and chairs will also make classes better.”
