Nippon Foundation School

Mr. Pen Phunna is the school director of the Kompong Chamlong Nippon Foundation School.

On himself: I am forty-four years old and married. I have one daughter and three sons. My house is approximately 7 kilometers away from the school. I ride a bicycle to school every day.

On his teaching history: I graduated teacher school in the eastern province of Prey Veng in 1993 and started teaching primary school in that province. Three years later, I was promoted to school director. Because of the hardships of my family’s living condition, I asked the Ministry of Education to transfer me to the western province of Battambang, where I am teaching today. On my arrival at the village, the local authorities gave me a plot of land the size of one hectare for farming. Living here is better than in my home village in Prey Veng. I hope my future will be bright and prosperity. Now I can earn some money from farming to subsidize my family’s expenses.

On teaching: I think all the subjects set forth by the Ministry of Education are important. However, while living here, I’ve noticed that the morality of the villagers is a bit low. Sometime violence breaks out in families. I think that morality is the most important subject that my students can pass on to their parents and relatives.

On his students: “My school children are best in Khmer literature, then mathematics. They are weak in Khmer dictation and redaction. They cannot writing is not very detailed. They are moderate on the subjects of history, geography and the social studies.”
