The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Kon Ka Ek Nippon

Foundation School

Mr. Theam Boeun is the director of the Kon Ka Ek Nippon Foundation School

On himself I am fifty-eight years old. I have six children, and one of my sons is attending this school. My wife is a farmer. Our house is three kilometers from the school. I come here on foot, by bicycle, or by my son’s motorcycle.

On the new building: I was very excited when it was built. Now I keep the grounds around the school as nice as I can. Before I became director the school was supervised by Mr. Mean Sot [the villager interviewed further on]. After his retirement, I took over, and he became the chief of the school committee. The new school is very good. I can keep all the school materials and supplies in the building without having to worry about thieves. Before this school was built, we had two buildings. One was inside a pagoda, and the other was near the pagoda. When this building was complete, I moved the students from the pagoda to the other one, and the students in that school to the new one. Now nobody studies at the pagoda. The old school is made of wood and it began to rot as the time passed. It was originally built in 1969. The roof was made of tin and was full of holes. The people around here repaired it together and changed the roof, but the walls were still old. You could see the students studying in the school from outside.
