The Michael And Gail Yanney School

(August, 2001)

Mr. Lay Chhun is a 63-year-old farmer with two grandchildren studying at the Michael and Gail Yanney School.  He is married with five children.

In Their Own Words. . .

On his life: “I was born and grew up in this village.  My family has 3 hectares of rice fields that yield about 4 tons of rice every year.  This is enough for us to eat, with some left-over to sell.”[The vast majority of farmers in Cambodia are living at a subsistence, or near-subsistence level, like Mr. Lay Chhun.]

On the new school: “Once I learned that donors will help build a school for our children, I was very, very happy because our existing school was very old.  Jeremy Brest and Mr. and Mrs. Iris Brest did not give us rice to eat, but instead they gave us a school that will increase our human resources.  Children in this village will get knowledge from this school and they will develop our village.”

Message for the donors: “I would like to express my deep thanks to Jeremy Brest and to Mr. and Mrs. Iris Brest for building a school for our children to study in.  I wish them happiness and prosperity.”
