Sugita School

Mr. Kong Thon is the director of the Osamu and Noriko Sugita School. He has been the director since 1993 and was a teacher previously. He continues to teach and also has two grandsons and four granddaughters at the new school.
In Their Own Words. . .
| On the new building: | “I like this new school building because I think it is the prettiest school building I have ever seen. It is very different from the old school building because it has good shade, sound does not travel from one classroom to the next, and it has a good roof, which keeps rain from coming into the classroom. The old building was very old and had holes in the roof and no walls between classrooms. We had to stop class during rain because of the holes in the roof and students had difficulty understanding their teachers because the sounds from one class traveled to the others.”

| On teaching: | “I like being a professional teacher because I would like to strengthen and advance the Khmer language and Khmer literature to develop our society well. It is difficult when students do not have good understanding of the basics. For example, if a student does not understand Khmer language, they cannot learn about Khmer culture and civilization.”

| On school subjects: | “The students like learning Khmer because they know that through learning how to read and write they can improve their minds. I like teaching Khmer and mathematics because these two subjects are very important. Especially mathematics because that way they can learn how to use numbers.”
