The Pearl and Mary

Flanders School

(October, 2001)

I Lon is a fourth grade student at the Pearl and Mary Flanders School.  Last year he was ranked first among his 29 classmates.  His parents are farmers and his house is five kilometers away from the school.  He and two sisters walk every day to study at the school.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “I like the new school because it is very nice and rain does not interrupt the classes.  At the old school, we had to stop class during rain.”

On school subjects: “I am good at Khmer but bad at mathematics.  I like reading books and newspapers, but it is hard for me to keep up in mathematics and I am not interested in it.”

On his hobbies: “I like to play football and volleyball.”

On his future: “When I grow up, I want to be a teacher of Khmer literature.  I want the children of the next generation to know about our literature.  If I can earn enough money, I want to go to France because it is a nice country with a beautiful landscape, from the pictures I have seen.”
