The Prey Chan Nippon

Foundation School

Ao Van works as the cook in the kitchen donated by DONBOSCO.

On herself:

I am sixty-five years old, and have four children. All of them are already married. Four of my grandchildren are at this school. I used to take odd jobs at the Thai border but now I work in this kitchen. My work as a cook involves preparing meals for the children in the morning and in the afternoon. I’ve only lived here for two years. I’m originally from Kampong Thom. I moved here with my children. When we lived in Kampong Thom, the situation was not good. We had no land for farming. Now all of my four children live here, and we have our own land allotted by the authorities. Most of the villagers here do day-to-day jobs or cut and sell trees. Last month, a mine killed a villager while he was out cutting wood.

On the new building:

I’m very happy with the new school. Now I always encourage my grandchildren to go to school. Since we’ve had this building, students no longer have to study under a tree.
