The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Rattanak Sophorn Nippon

Foundation School

(August, 2001)

Mrs. Yem Somaly is the Director of The Rattanak Sophorn Nippon Foundation School.  She has been a teacher for over 10 years and director for the past two years.  Her two daughters attend the school.

In Their Own Words. .

On the new building: “The number of students was decreasing when we used the old building, but the student body is increasing every year because they like the new school building.”

On her family: “I have two daughters studying in this new school building.   My older daughter is in third grade and the other is in first grade.  I want them to learn at this school because I am here and my house is near this school.”

On teaching:  “I became a teacher because I have liked this job since I was young.  The best thing about my job is the respect that you receive, even when walking around the village.  I like teaching Khmer and mathematics because these two subjects are very important for children to learn in primary school.  I don’t like teaching applied science because we lack teaching instruments.”

Message for donor:  “Thanks to The Nippon Foundation, we have a nice new school building.”
