Foundation School

(October, 2001)

Chon Chea is a 14-year-old fifth grade student at the Rokar Thom Nippon Foundation School.  He was ranked fourth in his class of 22 at the end of fourth grade.  His parents are farmers and he has two brothers and four sisters.  Three of his sisters are at the school with him.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “I like the new school because it is easy to study.  The old building’s roof used to leak when it rained and I thought the roof might collapse.  Now it’s quiet inside the classroom so I can hear the teacher well.”

On his chores:  “I help with the cooking and chop firewood for my family to use.  I also like to read books.”

On his future:  “I want to graduate from secondary school so that I can have an education.  I want to be a farmer when I grow up because it is easier than other jobs.  I don’t know if my parents went to school, but they can read Khmer.”
