Khat Khemara is a 12-year-old second grade student at the Sampong Nippon Foundation School.  Last year he was ranked first among the 29 students in his class.  His father is a fisherman and his mother is a farm laborer.  He has six siblings, two of whom are at the school with him.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “I like the new building because we have enough tables and the sun does not shine on us during class.”

On his free time: “I carry water to fill our family water jar, and clean up the house.  I like to play jumping games and hide- and-seek with my friends.”

On his future: “I plan to graduate from primary school but I am not certain if I will go to school after that because my family is poor.”

If I could go anywhere…: “I would go to Phnom Penh.  When I arrived there, I would find a job to help my family.  I would like to be a teacher or a nurse.”
