Hourt Chandy is a 12-year-old fourth grade student at the Sandan II Nippon Foundation School.  She was ranked first in her class of 25 at the end of the school year.  Her parents are farmers and she is the youngest of eight children.  Two of her siblings are at the school with her.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “I like the new building.  When we had class in the old building, it was hot and noisy and I didn’t like going to school.  Now I like to come.”

On school subjects: “I like learning mathematics because I get good grades in it.  I don’t like learning applied science because it is very difficult to remember.”

On her free time: “When I have free time, my chores are to clean the house and cook.  I also like to read books with my friends.”

On her future: “I want to finish secondary school so that I can find a good job.  My parents never finished secondary school, so they want me to finish.”

If I could go anywhere…:  “I would go to Thailand because I want to see other countries.”

If I could do anything: “I would help the people in the village to develop.  I want to be a teacher.”
