In Their Own Words

On the new building: “I am happy with the new school.  The students always wear their uniforms.  They are very conscientious and study hard.”

On how she became a teacher:  “I graduated from the regional teacher training school in Kompong Cham town in 1990.  First, I was sent to work at Prey ChreungPrimary School in the province for two years.  Then I went to Khloy Primary School in this commune until 2000.  Last year when the Sozaburo and Yasuko Inoue School was completed, I was sent to teach here.”

On her personal history: At the beginning of the Pol Pot regime, I was 6 years old.  One of my sisters died of illness because of the lack of medical care and medicines.  After the Khmer Rouge, I wanted to be a nurse or doctor.  I applied to study at the College of Medicine, but my parents were poor and could not support my study.  I chose to become a teacher because this way I have an income and can help relieve the burden on my parents.  I have three sisters and five brothers.  My parents are farmers in another district in Kompong Cham province.”

On the future of her children: “I hope that in the future at least one or both of my children will get an education and work for the Royal Government.”

On school subjects: “My students like to study Khmer.  They study hard because they want to be able to read newspapers and books.”

Message for Donor: “I would like to thank Sozaburo and Yasuko Inoue for providing us this concrete building and wish them good health and successes in their tasks and missions.”
